Obituary from the Times - Republican, Corydon, Iowa, July 15, 1897:

William McConnel was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, October 8th, 1814, and died at the home of his son C. S. McConnel in Boise City, Idaho, June 28, 1897. He came to Iowa in 1844 and settled in Wayne County in 1855, where he lived till the fall of 1886, when he went to Idaho. Of his twelve children, nine are still living; the only daughter, Mrs. J. A. Lawson, is living here in Corydon, the wife of Mr. J. A. Lawson, County Recorder. Father McConnel had been in failing health for some years, and at the time of his death four of his sons were permitted to be with him. He was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in his early youth and lived and died a faithful Christian. As the earthly life drew to a close, the eternal life came into view, and he assured those about him that he was anxiously awaiting the time of his translation, for his work was done and he could truthfully say, as he did, that he had lived to make the world better; and now he has gone to reward, and while the loved ones on this side are saddened by the separation, they are at the same time comforted by the assurance that he has rejoined the beloved wife and other loved ones who precedded him to the Glory world where they will await the coming of all the family.
