Notes and References

(Noble County was created from Guernsey County in 1851, after Grahams and McConnels had migrated to Iowa.)

1Robert Graham, Graham researcher writes: From a history of Preston County, West Virginia I found that David Graham and Mary Patterson came to America around 1750 and lived awhile along the Juniata River in Pennsylvania before moving west across the mountains to Preston County. They were in Preston County (then Monongalia County ) prior to 1779. The book says their sons were John, Robert, Joseph, William and David. David is the father of Joseph . . .

Joseph Graham homesteaded in Section 29, Seneca Township, Noble County, about two miles northwest of Mt. Ephraim. James McConnel, his daughter Nancy's father-in-law, homesteaded about a mile further northwest.

"History of Noble County" says:

The Methodist Episcopal class at Mount Ephraim, was organized prior to 1830, and first met in school-houses and cabins. Among the early members were Joseph Graham, class-leader;. . . Irvin Kennedy (local preacher). . .

2 Garry McLaughlin's now defunct web site (http://www.gbso.net/actor/actor.htm) included headstone photographs for Samuel and Margaret Glover, Nancy's grandparents, in the Mt. Ephraim cemetery and the following information -
Samuel was the son of John. It is believed that John came from England and settled in Delaware. There were three sons of John's that we know;
Amos, Nehemiah and Samuel, all believed to have been born in Delaware but not confirmed that last I knew. Nehemiah settled in what is now West Virginia at Glover's Gap. Amos settled for a while in Pennsylvania, then moved to Ohio and later to Iowa where he died.
Samuel settled for a while in Pennsylvania and later moved to South East Ohio in Guernsey County, now Noble County. There both he and his wife Margaret died and are buried at Mt. Ephraim Cemetery. They had the following Children:
Mary, Nancy, Margaret, Martha, Levi, Rebecca, Rachel, John D., Maribah, Elizabeth, and Samuel, Jr.

3Samuel's obituary, courtesy of Graham researcher, Robert Graham: Samuel Graham b. 10/4/1829 d. 10/30/1911; m. Hannah Miley (1) ; 2nd m. Rebecca Ward (2)
Samuel Graham was born in Seneca township, Noble county, Ohio, October 4, 1829, and died October 30th, 1911 at the age of 82 years and 20 days. The direct cause of death was Brights disease.
In 1852 during the bold excitement in California he went to that country where he was actively engaged in gold mining a little more than ten years. He was a successful gold miner and in 1862 he returned to Noble county, Ohio, and bought the farm upon which he lived until the time of his death.
He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Miley April 1864. To this union were born five children, one dying in infancy. The living are J. S., of Selma, Iowa; Miss Selena M. and Curtis P. of the home and Charles A. who lives within one mile of the old home. All were at their father's bedside during his recent illness and present at the time of death.
On March 4th, 1873, Mrs. Graham passed away leaving husband and four little ones to mourn her departure. In the latter part of the same year, he was married to Miss Rebecca Ward who exercised a motherly love and care over Mr. Graham's children. The second Mrs. Graham died in May 1910.
Mr. Graham was a staunch member of the church for many years. In 1851 he was converted to the Christian family at Liberty school house in Seneca township, under the preaching of Gilbreath Bros., evangelists. March 4th 1866 he united with the Evangelical Lutheran church at Mt. Zion, Buffalo township this county and for a period of over forty five years was an honored, helpful and consistent member of this church.
Funeral services were held at the home last Tuesday afternoon. Rev. B. A. Richardson, his pastor officiating. Interment was made in the family cemetery where his body rests between those of his wives.
Mr. Graham was an excellent man, in fact he was one of God's noble men. A large number of neighbors, relatives and friends were present at the funeral.
He is gone but not forgotten. The world is the better for his having lived in it. Now he rests in God's peace.

4Joseph held office in the in newly formed incorporated Birmingham. See biographical sketch on the Van Buren County, Iowa, rootsweb messageboard for more details on Joseph.

5Simon died in Santa Rosa, California, as did former Van Buren County neighbor, Lucy Ann Bryant
